Website Design/Reclamation Projects

The Crested Butte Airport

This was a completely new design I did for this small Colorado mountain airport that is stuggling to survive against the best efforts of a local land developer who is trying to close the airport so that he might build houses on the land.

The original website was built by a pilot using whatever software he could lay hands on and suffered from all of the usual problems, including:
  • serious "code-bloat"—the original home page was 27K, the new home page is 9K
  • low-quality, non-optimized graphics
  • hard-coded page width—the new design reflows to fit the available window size
  • disorganized and inconsistent site structure—I worked closely with the owner of the airport to organize a large amount of information into a consistent and easily navigable structure
  • an almost complete inability to update the site—in June of 2003 the home page was still advertising the 2001 fly-in! I was able to reorganize and clean up the code to a point where news items, new photos, and whole new pages can be added to the site with minimal effort.
The new site presents a professional and competent public image and allows quick and easy access to important information.

North Shore Rentals Network

This was the first of two Cold Fusion database projects I did for a real estate developer in Massachusetts. The original site was both poorly designed and virtually non-functional. The intent was a website where available rental properties could be listed along with pictures and descriptions, all maintained by office staff having no experience with HTML or other web technologies.

Here is a partial list of improvements I was able to make:
  • new, simple but professional graphic design
  • cross-browser support
  • redevelop the underlying database structure to allow for easier maintenance and unlimited scalability
  • reorganize and restructure the registration and property listing process to allow realtors throughout the area to use the site
  • provide a web-based front-end application enabling non-webmasters to upload photographs and floorplans to the site and display them with their property listings
  • develop a powerful search tool for end-users of the site
The new site is easy to use for both realtors and renters and presents a professional and competent public image.

I have posted a copy of the original site here for comparison. You won't be able to experience the original functionality though, since it's not on a Cold Fusion server.

The Tannery Mall

The second of two Cold Fusion database projects I did for Hall and Moskow in Massachusetts. The original site was poorly designed and very difficult to use for both the mall management company and the store owners. The site was set up so business owners in the mall could enter their hours of operation, business description, contact information, upload their logo graphic and generally maintain their own web page.

Here are some of the improvements I was able to make:
  • updated graphics without frames
  • improved cross-browser support
  • redevelop the underlying database structure to allow for easier maintenance and unlimited scalability
  • reorganize and restructure the user interface to make it much easier to use
  • provide for dynamically generated META tags for the individual businesses to improve the search engine placement for each business in the mall
The new site is much more easily maintained and updated and has become a valuable tool for both the mall and the individual business owners.

I have posted a copy of the original site here for comparison. Again, most of the functionality has been disabled since it's not on a Cold Fusion server.

Off Duty Productions

This is one of the first installations of my new cookie-less PHP shopping cart system. Designed to be both easily portable and expandable to accomodate new product lines, this shopping cart system does not require users to allow cookies to be set on their computers.

Working from a rough design supplied by the client, I developed this site to be very fast and easy to use.

Compass Continuum

These two sites are constantly evolving to meet the needs of the nursing and case management professionals who use them. Both sites use MS Access databases, dynamically generated ASP pages, and real-time, online credit card processing. These sites were designed by the owners while I developed the ASP/Access code that make them work.

CEUs4CaseManagers.com offers over 150 college-level courses and currently has over 12,000 registered users. Account holders can purchase credit hours, review course material, take the tests, print certificates, and keep track of the continuing education units required for recertification.

RNCaseManager.com provides a marketplace for employers and jobseekers in the nursing and case management professions. Jobseekers can post their resumés and search the database for jobs that match their criteria while employers can post job openings and search for qualified candidates.

Both sites feature extensive "admin" sections that allow the owners to manage all aspects of the sites without my involvement.

4:20 Express!

Rock and Roll to Move Your Soul! This was a fun project I did for my old friend and former band-mate, Jeffrey "Splinter" Cunningham, and his current band, 4:20 Express. Still a work in progress, this site features an extensive site management section which allows the band members to add, edit, and update large portions of the site themselves, as well as an original Photoshop flame job for their logo!

Being able to post up-to-date schedule information, upload recent photos, manage a growing email list, update their gig calendar, and edit much of the text, all through a web-based "admin" interface, has proven invaluable to the band's ability to stay in touch with their fans. I'm currently working on an E-Flyer system using PHP's graphics manipulation functions that will let the band create small JPG flyers announcing upcoming shows that can be emailed to their list.

Tim Powers, Comedian

An up-and-coming comic based in Holywood, CA, Tim Powers needed a website that he could keep fresh and current, without depending on a "web guy" to do the updates. My good friend and talented artist, Liz Maes (www.Vizual-Impactz.com), did the design work while I developed a full-featured "admin" section that allows Tim to update virtually the entire website himself, through a simple, web-based interface designed just for him.

Arkansas Valley Yamaha

Located in a remote but very beautiful part of Colorado, this Yamaha motorcycle, ATV, and snowmobile dealership relies on their website for a significant portion of their business. I designed a simple but very fast interface, and developed an extensive "admin" section to enable easy updates to the important and rapidly changing inventory and financing options.

LAPS Walk 2005

The Brain Injury Association of Michigan has joined with Ernie Irvan's Race2Safety to create the biggest event in Brain Injury Association history, LAPS Walk 2005! People will be able to walk the track at Michigan International Speedway with NASCAR legend Ernie Irvan and select NASCAR drivers as part of a fun-filled afternoon of activities.

This website was designed by my talented friends, John and Mary Rios at Grafix Jam. I was hired to develop the entire online registration/donation system. Similar to many of the national charity walkathon websites, this system includes team and family registration features, "sponsor a walker" functionality, extensive "Walker Account" management tools, and a full-featured "admin" section so the sponsors can manage all aspects of the registration and donation databases.

Colorado Freedom Memorial Foundation

Dedicated to honoring the memory of all fallen Colorado heroes, regardless of branch of service or conflict, The Colorado Freedom Memorial will be constructed during 2005 on a site near Buckley Field. An integral part of that project is the collection of the names, ranks, and other information for all Colorado residents who have made the supreme scrifice for their country. This is to be accomplished primarily through the online database on their website.

Starting with a beautiful new logo designed by nationally known aviation artist, Joe Jones of Art Works Studio, I designed this website to be fast, flexible, and allow for quick access to a large amount of information, as well as providing several interactive features to encourage the participation of the public in this important project. I also developed an extensive, web-based "admin" section which allows for easy site updates and database management.

One of my favorite parts is the Memorial Honoree graphic under the logo which displays the name, rank, hometown, and conflict of a randomly selected honoree from the database.
